Karley deets
Bio
Karley Deets was raised in the forested hills of the Berkshire Mountains where she spent her childhood navigating a swampy world filled with frogs, mud, and wonder. While pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Hartford she discovered ceramics as a means of deepening her relationship with nature through an artistic lens. True to her childhood wonder, Karley’s work features sculptural and functional frog forms. Karley graduated from the University of Hartford in 2023 with a BFA in ceramics and art history before joining Cub Creek as an artist in residence.
Statement
My work exists in the space between playful and serious, functional and sculptural, tactile and spiritual. To me, the process is the greatest aspect of this artform. Digging, mixing, forming, sculpting, destroying, and recreating center my being as an object maker. Working with the clay is working through concepts in a physical space so that I may better communicate with the viewer, with the earth I am forming, and with myself. This work often manifests as playful frogs, carved pots, and faceted bottles.
