Bio:
David Bruce has lived most of his life between the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina and the beaches of Southern Virginia. During his youth in the small town of South Hill, Virginia, David began exploring the vast countryside and nearby lakes. Inspired by the adventures that came of this exploration, he went on to become a climber while attending college. A love of the environment and the excitement one finds while moving through the vertical space of mountainsides finds its way into nearly every part of his life. However, there is also a more serious and professional side to this eclectic individual. David received his Bachelors degree from East Carolina University in 2003 while studying Urban Planning and Ecology. He carries a dedicated interest in the relationship between man and environment. This interest became apparent to him at an early age while taking high school courses in architecture, art and biology. In 2005, David moved from Asheville, NC to Richmond, Virginia to study art and prepare for entry into a graduate program. While at Cub Creek, he is developing his work and handling the applications for the MFA programs of his choice.
Statement:
For the past three years, I have used the act of making as mechanics for exploring awareness, perception and the human experience. My work involves a conscious selection of materials and an expressive use of method and composition. There is a meditative quality that comes during the physical process of creating the work, while conceptually I am engaged in a dialogue with the ideas and their physical counterparts.
My current work is an investigation of the intersections of memory, identity, navigation and the object. I am concerned with the development of the cognitive landscape and the way in which an individual perceives his reality while navigating physical and mental space.
